Oesophageal temperature differences in children.

چکیده

It has been shown that the temperature of the oesophagus in the anaesthetized and intubated adult is not uniform along its length. There is an area below the distal end of the endotracheal tube that is affected by ventilation and the temperature of the inspired gases. This area does not extend into the lowest quarter of the oesophagus (Stupfel and Severinghaus, 1956; Whitby and Dunkin, 1963, 1969). The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that similar oesophageal temperature differences are found in children and to suggest a rough guide as to how far an oesophageal temperature probe should be inserted if these misleading ventilatory effects are to be avoided. An opportunity has also been taken of comparing pharyngeal and lower oesophageal temperatures in infants.

Monitoring of upper oesophageal sphincter pressure in children.

In children technical limitations of upper oesophageal sphincter manometry have restricted investigation to the pull through technique under sedation. In this study we have used an adapted sleeve manometric technique for upper oesophageal sphincter monitoring in unsedated children and determined the influence of the state of arousal on upper oesophageal sphincter pressure. Twenty six children a...

Temperature differences in the oesophagus. The effects of intubation and ventilation.

Oesophageal temperature variations during anaesthesia were measured in a number of groups of adult patients. It was found that in the upper half of the oesophagus intubation and controlled ventilation produced a greater degree of cooling than spontaneous breathing through a face-mask. Partial withdrawal of the endotracheal tube resulted in an upward shift of the cooled segment. Reducing the con...
